When things Go wrong!

Yes, those things happens with InDesign too! On the other hand, InDesign has really great crash recovery system, and it saved my work so many times. But, sometimes, InDesign just keeps crashing even with no documents opened, or not saving settings that we made, not displaying fonts correctly. First thing you can try is to reset/delete all application settings! This will delete all settings and load default ones like when you first installed InDesign.

All you have to do is to press Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows) or Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Shift (Mac) IMMEDIATELY after you start InDesign! You will see prompt dialog like you see on screenshot.

Also, there is another, manual method for deleting preferences. Preferences are fond on different places depending on the OS. This files are hidden, so make sure you enable showing hidden files in your OS. Here are default paths:

InDesign Defaults:

Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\
(Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used)
Windows Vista or Windows 7:
C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\
(Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used)
Macintosh:
Hard Drive/Users/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/
(Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used)

InDesign SavedData:

Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\Caches\
(Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used)
Windows Vista or Windows 7:
C:\Users\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\Caches\
(Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used)
Macintosh:
Hard Drive/Users/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/
(Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used)

Don’t forget to set all settings back as you used to.
Hopefully, your InDesign is now working as before! 😀
